Develop a Sleep Routine With Your Child

A healthy sleep routine is an essential part of any healthy person's life. For students, getting the right amount of sleep can make a huge difference in class. To help your child develop healthy sleeping habits early on, use these tips.

It Takes Time

If you've decided to implement a new sleeping routine at home, keep in mind that adjusting to it will take some time. Instead of forcing your child into bed and trying to make them fall asleep much earlier than they're accustomed to, take it one step at a time. It can take about two weeks for them to get used to a new routine, so don't give up. Have them go to bed 15 minutes earlier every couple of days until they finally reach the desired bedtime.

Create a Calming Bedtime Routine

To help your child fall asleep, develop a bedtime routine that helps them relax before bed. Their routine should be half an hour to an hour long and should include relaxing activities. Have your child put away all of their screens before this hour starts since the blue light emitted by screens can make falling asleep harder. Instead have them read, take a warm bath, or meditate before jumping into bed.

Know How Much Sleep Is Appropriate

The amount of sleep your child will need in order to feel well rested in the morning will depend a lot on their age. Typically, younger students need more sleep than teens, but the exact hours will vary. Your doctor should be able to recommend a healthy range for your child. Keep in mind that too much sleep isn't great and can actually have a negative effect on your child's performance.
